Thats right. Uncle Poly wants YOU to join the army! Start building boys!

Before I start, if the leaders of SL want to help me coordinate this (I'm looking at you Narbs), please let me know.

I've been talking to some old veteran alliance mates (S1, LLJK alliance) about strategy. Here is the paraphrased, THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO OK K THX? version:

Work on your granaries and walls.
IGM me ASAP with the status of both. Anytime you get either upgraded, IGM me. I'm going to be keeping a spreadsheet listing these details (oh god why did I volunteer for this?). You should at least have a level 8-10 wall and a granary capable of holding 6000+ crop. These are minimums, more is better. I don't care if you don't need that much crop right now, get it upgraded. It makes the alliance's life easier to reinforce if we dont have to worry about crop going to waste because your stupid granary was too small. Smile

Defensive troops NOW
I know I have been harping on you guys to work on offensive but I'm changing my tactic. If everyone has 100 defensive troops sitting around, thats a lot of defense that can be mobilized immediately. I know this will be harder for the little guys, but do the best you can. This is not a voluntary request, this is an official alliance command. Start building defensive troops. Keep me updated on your status.

Have an offensive army worth a damn?
IGM me the details.

WE NEED SPECIALIST VOLUNTEERS
If you want to dedicate yourself to pumping out specialist troops and providing for the alliance, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Basically, you would be making as many troops as possible and reinforcing weaker members around the alliance so everyone has a standing army, as well as having your own large mobile defense force. I may even see if I can get people to supplement your production with resources. Depends on how busy/close to travian-induced suicide I get.

Specialists: IGM ME IF YOU WANT TO DO IT. Also, build these:
--Gauls: Phalanx only.
--Gauls with large economy: Majority Phalanx, with some Druidriders for _fast_ reinforcement
--Teutons: Spearfighters only. Paladins aren't worth it.
--Romans: Praetorians only. Most effective infantry defense per crop. Don't worry about Legionaires, let the gauls and teutons cover calvary defense.

As I said before, these are not requests. THESE ARE COMMANDS. Please do as they say. If you don't have a good wall or granary, haven't been building troops and are not being active, there is a good chance I won't organize defenses for you. We have limited resources and WILL NOT waste them on people who are not trying to contribute. I understand small players have smaller economies. Do what you can.

Thanks for listening to me. Now get to it. Be all you can be and all that "Go Army" jazz.

In case you feel like reading what my friends actually said, they offered these nuggets of wisdom:

Quote :

"They can throw their troops at a prepared enemy all day and get nothing done but slow you down even worse. This is one of those times you must truly emphasize the importance of walls/troop holding capability. If you do not you will not survive. You must make that clear to them. People seem to have this idea that you have to have as good of an offense to make a scratch, when having a decent defence all over will hurt your enemy much much more. "
Quote :

"If you guys can keep defending for a little while they will have wasted a lot of effort and growth time on you. You sound like you might be in a spot like we were in on S5. We had minimal players with big armies but could defend like motherfuckers and nobody could really do any lasting damage without blowing their wad."
Quote :

"Make people build their walls and granaries. Way too many players neglect having these things completed and it makes organizing a defence much more difficult and much less costly to your enemies."
Quote :

"Assign roles or specialties to players. If it is early enough on the server having a few people good at a few things can make a big difference. Have your defensive, offensive, pop, trader ... type players focus on those things for a while. Having support guys and key situation players can save you early. Later on everyone should be expected to provide in all areas but at first not all players can afford to build fully upgraded troops of a certain type, so specializing can give you small advantages for a while."

If you're in SL, hit me up with those IGMs. I'll handle that half.

I agree with all of this... but will add a few thoughts of my own:

Paladins and Leg are expensive. However, both are duel purpose... so you can use them to raid inactives when they aren't defending. If you have a very unbalanced defense (e.g. all prets or spears) then you're at risk in those villages... and Gauls are at risk to an infantry attack if they have all Phalanx. An all cavalry defense will rape a roman pret defense, and an imp attack will rape an all spear defense. The phalanx is the most balanced defense of all three specialized units, but you need to offset relatively lower defense values with higher numbers of defenders.

To put in in perspective...
On infantry defense, 100 pret = 163 phalanx
On cavalry defense, 100 spear = 120 phalanx

The unbalanced defense risk can be offset by trading garrisons. I do this with some of my close neighbors... I'll send out prets and then send me spears and phalanx. However, I can't move those troops around unless those allies are online. It's also slower to move, because instead of walking straight between my villages they have to walk home and then back again. For this reason, I suggest doing troop trading only with players very close to you on the map!! If you can trade sitter status with a close player to do defense sharing, that's even better. Just make sure you both understand the "rules" of how you're sharing each other's defense.

Also, not everyone keeps a standing defense in every village, so if I get attacked in an undefended village, I could get screwed unless I can move a balanced defense there quickly. I'll build mostly Prets for defense, but I'm going to keep a smaller leg force around too in case I need to very quickly build my own defense in a non-garrisoned village. IRC will help with speeding up reinforcements requests, but as I just dicovered today, it doesn't work behind some firewalls... did I mention that Skype does? Very Happy

I like that plan. So far I have only been attacked once since the server started and that attack was an accident. I will be able to make many troops if it continues to be that way.

Recon - scouting patrol Smile

Delta force - I'll use a quote here... " The chief export of Chuck Norris is pain. "

National Guard - Lots of defense.

If its your offensive village I hope you have room for more than one granary though... I always have 2 granaries in all my villages for reinforcement purposes, I have 4 in my capital so I can afford to feed a -100,000 wheat an hour army...

I would agree with random. On one of my account on another server, where I joined late with many big players, I find that to be able to muster a respectful defense, you need 2 or more granaries. You can get away with one if you have other villages around that has 2 or more with merchants upgraded with Trade offices.

Otherwise, you're pretty much a farm.

I would like to post my thoughts on this. I have not been here long. I have been in wars in other servers, and have a good idea of what is required.

1. Granaries: At least two full granaries are necessary in every village. Having larger granaries will allow people to send larger shipments of crops to support the larger amounts of troops we are going to start having. I actually prefer three full granaries.

2. Warehouse: This isn't defense necessary, but you will want at least one full warehouse and level 15 or so on a second one. If you are caught by surprise in a village while you are sleeping, you can lose a warehouse and lose a bunch of resources because your warehouse won't house the resources while you build.

3. Defense: Someone mentioned balance. I think it's very important to have a balanced defense also. I recommend that you be prepared to defend against armies that are 75 percent infantry and 25 percent cavalry. Very few players will have more than 25 percent of their offensive army as cavalry, because of the cost.

For Romans, you'll want 75 percent Praets and 25 percent Legos. Gauls should have no problems -- a mix of haeduans, druids, and phalanx are awesome. I have equal parts phalanx and druids and haeduans, though I also attack with Haeduans. Teutons -- not sure because I don't play them and I think they suck.

A good rule of thumb is always defense equal to population in crops. I fall short now, because most of my defense was wiped out a while ago defending someone. Then build 1/4 extra to assist other people.

4. Walls are less important in my mind than two granaries. But you should complete them as soon as possible.

very smart, Tyr, you cease to impress me.

I would like to second that 75% Infantry, and 25% cavalry. Heh yeah shut up.

Though I like to have a balanced fighting force with my defense. Eventaully I'm going to train to have 2 times the number of infantry, once I get my Grannary situation settled, so yes, 75% more assult. :/

lol... not sure that came out right, Franco!

I wonder if the whole gold system changes the need for as many duplicate defensive structures like granaries and warehouses. For example, when we were defending Poly from SecretSomeone his village went from one L15 granary or something like 5 or 6 L20 granaries insanely quickly. It cost a few $$, but it was really fun and effective. Very Happy

Of course, that only works when you're online... and defensively you need to think about what can happen when you're not watching too. Well written, Tyr!
